Edith Wharton vs. Charles Dickens
Side-by-side comparison of two thinkers
Edith Wharton
1862 – 1937
Edith Newbold Wharton was an American writer and designer. Wharton drew upon her insider's knowledge of upper-class New York society to portray, realistically, the lives and morals of the Gilded Age. In 1921, she became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for her novel The Age of Innocence.
"Each time you happen to me all over again."
Charles Dickens
1719 – 1793
English novelist and social critic whose works, including A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist, and Great Expectations, highlighted social injustices of Victorian England. He remains one of the most widely read and adapted authors in the English language.
"I loved her against reason, against promise, against peace, against hope, against happiness, against all discouragement that could be."
